Deze Van Cauwelaert-hoorn van de tweede generatie (gebouwd vanaf 1884) heeft een typisch “gantois”design. Ten opzichte van de 1ste generatie werd het instrument iets zwaarder gebouwd, dit om de projectie ten goede te komen.

Dit exemplaar van omstreeks 1890 werd veelvuldig gebruikt tijdens het “Belgische Hoornschool”-project, voor de concerten en opnames van een aantal Bruckner-symfonieën (OCE), en voor talloze andere concerten.

This Van Cauwelaert-horn of the second generation (from 1884) has a typical “Gantois” design. In contrast to instruments of the first generation, these horns are more solidly built in order to have better sound projection.

This specimen of around 1890 has been intensively used during th “Belgian hornschool”-project, and for concerts and recording of Bruckner symphonies with the Orchestre des Champs Elysées.

Vanaf ca 1890 ontwikkelde de tweede generatie Van Cauwelaerts (ook aangeduid als “frères et soeurs”) een tweede hoorntype, naast het populaire Gantois model. Dit model zocht naar een subtielere, lichtere klankkleur. Het “Liégeois”-model, zoals het onder hoornisten bekend was, was geïnspireerd op het “cor-solo” model van Franse natuurhoorns, had een vaste toonbuis en viel op door een uitzonderlijk groot en rank design. De hoorn was ontwikkeld om goed bespeelbaar te zijn in Bes-alto, de stemming kon door verwisselbare stempompen aangepast worden tot F. Het is ook één van de weinige instrumenten die, met uitzondering van het ventielblok, volledig progressief conisch gebouwd zijn. Dit instrument deed herhaaldelijk dienst voor het spelen van 1ste hoornpartijen in het orkest, onder meer voor Bruckner en Wagner met het Orchestre des Champs Elysées, maar ook voor Stravinsky’s Sacre du Printemps met de Kölner Akademie en de opname van Dubois’ octuors op de CD “the Royal brussels Hornsound”. Sinds eind 2009 werd deze hoorn door een identiek exemplaar in de collectie vervangen, in nog betere staat en met 3 originele stempompen voor stemmingen Bb, As en F.

From appr. 1890, the second generation of  the Van Cauwelaert family (also known as “frères et soeurs”) develloped a second horn model next to the existing “Gantois”. This instrument, based on the French “cor-solo” design had a lighter and more agile sound an was named the “Liégeois”-model because of its success with players from the class o Lejeune in the Liège conservatoire.

It had a fixed leadpipe, and had tuning slides of different lenghts in order to change the tuning from F to Bb alto.

It is a rare example of an instrument that is, with exception of the valve block, is constructed in an entirely conical way. It showed itself particularly usefull  for playing Bruckner and Wagner with the Orchestre des Champs Elysées, for “Carmen” with les Musiciens du Louvre, for “the Rite of Spring” with the Kölner Akademie, for the octets of Dubois on the  CD “the Royal Brussels Hornsound”,....

In 2009 the original instrument was changed for a nearly identical one, in showroom-new condition and with 3 original tuning slides for F, A flat alto and B flat alto.
