Eigenaardige hoorn. Een (afschroefbare...) beker van Raoux, rue des Minimes à Paris, gemakkelijk te dateren in de periode 1870-1880, een ventielblok van Millereau met “ascendant” 3de ventiel en serienummer 5343, een duimventiel dat een halftoonsverlenging bedient... toen ik deze hoorn voor het eerst in handen kreeg dacht ik dat er iemand creatief geweest was met een stock van oude onderdelen.
Een op maat gemaakt instrument voor één specifieke klant? Een experiment van Millereau met een overgebleven klankbeker? Een poging om een nieuw ventielsysteem te bouwen?
Research by Martin Mürner revealed it was an uncomman model produced by Raoux for some years around 1880. It’s a regular 3-valve ascending horn with a stopping valve, called the ”modèle Garigue”, as it was developed in the 1870’s by Raoux.
Strange horn... The (detachable...) bell flare from Raoux, Rue des Minimes à Paris can be dated quite easily between 1870 and 1880. But in addition it has a 4-valve set by Millereau (serial number 5343) with an ascending 3rd valve and a thumb valve that changes the pitch with half a tone...
When I first saw this instrument it looked like a very creative DIY-job with spare parts from the Raoux attick.
Was it a custom-build horn, or an experiment of Millereau with some old parts involved. Or an adaptation of an old natural horn somwhere early in the 20th century?
