Bijzonder mooie hoorn van Besson, Rue d’Angoulème à Paris. Het serienummer  75214 is uitzonderlijk precies te dateren: bijna zeker 1910.

Bijzonderheid is het transponerende draaiventiel  (halve toon) op de stempomp. De smalle beker is afgewerkt met een sierrand, wat doet vermoeden dat het instrument voor professioneel gebruik bedoeld was. De inscriptie “système prototype” op de bekerhals duidt op een fabrieksexperiment.

Franse instrumenten met vaste leadpipe uit deze periode zijn eerder zelfdzaam doordat de Franse spelers het wisselbogensysteem op de ventielhoorn nog tot ca 1920 bleven prefereren. Het instrument werd in het voorjaar van 2010 gerestaureerd door Daniel Kunst (Bremen).

Very nice horn by Besson, Rue d’Angoulème à Paris. The serial number (75214) can be dated quite easily: it was -nearly certainly- built in 1910.

This horn has a rather curious transposing rotary valve on the tuning slide, lowering the pitch with a semitone when opened. The narrow-flare bell is finished with a garland, which indicates that the instrument was most probably intended for professional use. The marking “sytème prototype” on the bell could mean this is a unique specimen, made as a factory experiment.

French instruments with a fixed leadpipe were not very common in this era, as most Franch players preferred the crook changing sytem until the 1920’s. The instrument was completely reconditioned by Daniel Kunst in the spring of 2010
